Google vs. Yahoo Search Engine Optimization

My first relevant post. Here goes.

I have recently been working on a search engine optimization (SEO) proposal with an up-and-coming social media expert for revamping a freelance client’s attorney Web site. We’re trying to cover all the bases on how we can make this as successful as possible for the client, and being that social media (SM) has recently become so huge and beneficial, also try to use this opportunity to see how beneficial it can really be.

Hopefully I will have more to blog about our social media findings and discoveries shortly down the road, but in the meantime, I’d like to share this tidbit that I discovered concerning meta tags and their relevance in Google vs. Yahoo. Let me preface this with the fact that I initially designed this attorney’s site almost 2 years ago, when I did not know nearly what I know now about SEO. I designed the homepage with strictly photography and links, and no copy for search engines to spider. Therefore with the exception of the links, the only content was the title tag, and meta keywords and descriptions. While experimenting with Firefox’s Rank Checker plugin, I was incredibly surprised to find that Yahoo listed the site #3 with the keyword phrase I searched for, while Google did not find it at all. Yahoo searched the meta description in the HTML of the homepage, while Google, on the otherhand, totally overlooked it. I imagine this is something that a lot of people are already aware of, but I found it very interesting. I was under the assumption that meta tags were nearly dead, but I guess they are only dead to Google.
